My name is Larkyn Statten and my family has cottages on Little Wapomeo Island.. my great grandfather Taylor Statten the 1st (the chief) used to hire Tom Thompson to do odd jobs around the camp and he even helped carry rocks up to build our fireplace on Little Wap. It's funny that I came across tour blog because last fall my father and I were up at the cottage and we saw you filming! I think I even have a few snapshots from my phone from that day. Anyways, I have heard a few stories about how he actually died.. but I guess we'll never really know. Good luck with your investigation!

Hi, I'm completing a novel which includes a lot of ancient sea travel. For the cover, I'm envisioning an open see with the bow of a canoe in the foreground. I was looking for a pic on the internet and came across yours. This is a self published affair, so I can't offer you any money, but wonder if you would give me permission to use it. (I'll photoshop the canoe into the open sea scene.) Of course, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the novel when it's complete. Thanks

Nicely done on the paint job. I hope you are happy with the result too. For the record, Chestnut "grey" (at least from the 1950's on) was a light lichen green. I don't know what it would have been in the 1910's.

I'll create a link to this blog on my CanoeGuy's Blog. Keep up the good work.

Wow.. what memories your blog/pictures bring back. We went to Taylor Statten Camps on Canoe Lake as children, and the ghost stories of Tom Thompson still give me the shivers!
What a wonderful project you're bringing to life.

For the record, I'm not sure I can call myself a "canoe expert"(to me an EXPERT is an EX-SPURT or "former drip under pressure" LOL LOL). I am certainly not in the same league as others such as Pam Wedd (of Bearwood Canoes) and Mike Elliot of (CanoeGuyBC as well as Kettle River Canoes) mentioned in this post regarding the painting of the canoe.

It was the colour of Tom's canoe that first got me wondering what type of canoe it might have been....grey was a colour used on some Chestnut canoes. So I posted a query online in several canoe related forums, including the WCHA forum, the results of which I then posted to my blog, and later used to write a short article in Canoeroots (Summer/Fall 2010).

I look forward to watching the development of this interesting art project centered around Tom Thomson's canoe.
